I follow a lot of groups and forums. I like to read about what people are making. It’s usually really fun. Usually.

A while back there was a big to do on a facebook group regarding cheap yarn vs. expensive yarn and natural material such as wool and alpaca vs. acrylic. It was kind of nasty and I learned that there are people who are yarn snobs. I love beautiful yarn as much as anyone, but I’m not going to look down on someone who works with something different. That’s pretty vile. It’s been really irritating me so what follows is an open letter to yarn snobs

Dear Yarn Snob,

Hooker please. Who do you think you are? Are you spending my money? No? Then keep your opinion to yourself. Are you knitting my shawls? Are you crocheting my afghans? No? Once again, keep your opinion to yourself. Feel free to use whatever it is you like to use, but when you are telling others how to enjoy their craft? Try keeping your opinion to yourself. It’ll be good for everyone.

Not everyone has access to “quality” yarn. Not everyone has the money, or even the knowledge that other things exist. I happen to live in a large metropolitan area and am lucky enough to have several shops close enough to travel to easily. Some people only have a large box store.

Shouldn’t we be encouraging and promoting our craft instead of belittling, chastising, and using something that should be a source of enjoyment as yet another vehicle for moral superiority?

On a similar topic, if there’s a public event, do not make faces and snide remarks to someone who you feel isn’t up to your standard. Unless you’re Steven Be, you’re not all that, and reality check, he would never act that way.

Have a great day,

Shimmer~

So, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest I’d like to share some blankets made in the mid 1980’s by my grandmother and I. This was when I was about 8 or 9 years old and had just learned to crochet. My first project was a pink and red afghan. We used Red Heart Super Saver. I crocheted the red squares and my grandma did the pink. Then she sewed it all together for me. It was good fun. Thirty years later, and countless runs through the washer machine, these blankets still don’t show many signs of wear. I’m pretty sure that Red Heart will be around with the cock roaches after the apocalypse.

So today’s final thought? You do you, but only you. With that, happy crafting everyone.

  1. As long as you love what you make, the yarn you use is great, whatever and wherever it came from. I agree with you just be glad someone is knitting or crocheting.
